Slabriki: Tradition and Spiritual Strength
Traditional background
Slabriki, often simply referred to in Suriname as Slabriki or Senna leaf, is a recognizable plant with broad, glossy leaves and striking yellow flower clusters. The herb is deeply rooted in Surinamese herbal tradition and has been used for generations within household and ritual applications.
The plant grows as an upright shrub or small tree of approximately 2 to 4 meters in height. The large, feathered leaves close in the evening. The yellow flower spikes have a candle like shape and stand out clearly in the landscape. Slabriki naturally grows along riverbanks and in sunny, open areas.
Within traditional Surinamese culture, mainly the leaves are used, fresh or dried. Known applications within families and communities include:
- Crushing the leaves for external traditional use
- Preparing a herbal infusion as part of cleansing rituals
- Processing in combined herbal blends and bitters
Slabriki is therefore often described as a herb that is traditionally connected with internal cleansing, and it has a laxative effect.
Use and interpretation differ per region, family, and tradition.
Spiritual meaning
Spiritually, Slabriki is seen within different Surinamese traditions as a herb that represents cleansing, protection, and renewal.
- Cleansing from within and without: The leaf symbolizes letting go of what no longer serves, both on a physical and energetic level.
- Protection: The herb is traditionally associated with warding off unwanted influences and restoring balance.
- Recovery and renewal: Slabriki symbolizes starting again, closing old phases, and creating space for new energy.
