Koorsuwiwiri: Tradition and Spiritual Strength
Traditional uses
Koorsuwiwiri is a graceful plant with bright clusters of flowers that grows in gardens and in the wild throughout Suriname and the Caribbean. Despite its cheerful appearance, it is a herb with a distinctly bitter and powerful presence that has been used in traditional herbal knowledge in various ways.
The leaves are often boiled or prepared as tea. In households, the plant has traditionally been used during moments of physical discomfort or imbalance, as well as for external skin care. Sometimes the leaves are crushed and applied as a compress. Within Surinamese families, the herb is also associated with cooling, calmness, and moments of recovery.

What makes Koorsuwiwiri particularly interesting is its rich composition of natural plant compounds, including triterpenoids (oleanane, ursane, euphane, lupane, protostane), steroids (phytosterols), flavonoids (flavones, flavonols, and isoflavones), iridoid glycosides, saponins, phenols, and polyphenols.
The plant also contains phenylpropanoids, phenylethanoids, naphthoquinones, coumarins, alkaloids, and long-chain fatty acids (C14–C32). In addition, naturally occurring compounds such as a cyanogenic glycoside and aliphatic alcohols contribute to the unique composition of this herb.
