Séémái: Tradition and Spiritual Strength

Traditional applications

Séémái, also known in Suriname as “makka makka” or “touch me not,” is a unique plant that reacts to touch: as soon as the leaves are touched, they fold together. This distinctive behavior makes the plant recognizable and appreciated within both households and traditional herbal knowledge.

Within Surinamese and Caribbean traditions, the roots, leaves, and seeds have been used for generations as part of herbal rituals and cleansing routines. Séémái is traditionally prepared as tea, bath, or decoction and is sometimes combined with other herbs in blends that have been passed down within families from generation to generation.

Within these traditions, the plant is mainly valued as a bitter and cleansing herb, with a place in rituals focused on inner care and balance.

Please note: applications differ per region and per family. Always do your own research to determine what works for you.

Spiritual meaning

Spiritually, Séémái is associated with sensitivity, protection, and warding off negative influences.

  • Sensitivity: Due to the closing of the leaves when touched, the plant symbolizes vulnerability and sensitivity.
  • Protection: The movement of the leaves is seen as a natural response to external stimuli and symbolizes protecting personal boundaries.
  • Awareness: Séémái, the plant itself, reminds you to pause, respect your own boundaries, and maintain balance between openness and withdrawal.

Our vision at Green Goodies & Herbs

For me, Séémái represents the power of conscious living: knowing when to open yourself and when to withdraw to protect yourself. This plant teaches us to listen to our own signals and boundaries. That is why Séémái has been given a place in my assortment, as a tribute to the subtle wisdom that nature offers us.
